Maybe because it's my name so I notice it more, but I seem to run into women named Melissa all the time. I don't notice many girls named Melissa now, but I've known lots of women, so maybe it has lost popularity over the years. So many people are trying to come up with hip/unique names now.

Most of the Melissa's I know are at least 30. I don't know a lot of girls being named that recently.
According to the Social Security Administration, Melissa peaked in popularity between 1977 and 1979 when it was the second most popular name in the US. It has since fallen to 104, between Danielle and Sierra.

Well, I am a Melissa (it is Greek for honeybee), my best friend at school was a Melissa, my friend on the school bus was a Melissa too! It was a pretty popular name in the late 60's here in Australia.(yeah showing my age). But it is in again now! My daughter, 11, has a best friend Melissa and two of our friends have named their girls Melissa (one of them is 7 and one of them is 5). I've always liked my name.

These days, I don't hear it as much. I knew about 2 or 3 during my 12 years of school, and that's my sister in laws name. I don't know any Melissa's besides her now.

It is very common. I've personally know 5 Melissa's and that's not counting the acquaintances and just ppl I knew of. It's a super common name... I would suggest something more unique, original...not boring.
