Expectations.
Tubby Smith had a good record, no problems with the NCAA, and did many things for the community of Lexington.
But there were several factors that led to Tubby leaving.
First, it had been 9 years since UK went to the Final Four. Kentucky is not used to a drought of that length. It's like the Yankees not making the MLB playoffs.
Second, there is not one, but two occasions where the Cats turned on themselves (2001-2 and 2005-6). Both times, Tubby failed to get the team on the right track.
Third, Tubby may be known for a lot of things over the years, but he was never able to get the big star that could become the go-to guy. Chris Lofton (Mr Kentucky in 2003) was available if we had only gone after him. Tyler Hansbrough (UK in top 5) could have been another option had we shown more interest. It seems like Tubby was happy getting role players that could stay for four years, than a star that would only last for 1 or 2.
Lastly, in the last 2 years Kentucky finished with a NCAA record of 2-2, which is bad when you consider the level of talent we have had at that time (Rondo, Sparks, Morris, Crawford, Perry, etc.) That put a lot of pressure on the Kentucky Athletic Board, who had to deal with raging fans upset at this lack of success.
Bottom line: Tubby is a solid coach with a classy demeanor who ran into the NCAA equivalent of the Yankees. I'm sure Minnesota will treat him well. Good luck to whoever is the next coach, he will need all the luck he can get.

I totally agree. I am a UofL fan and I hate the way UK and UK fans treated Tubby. Tubby left b/c he was underappreciated. When you win games like he did, win a championship with Pitino's player WHO WERENT ANY GOOD!, especially that amazing comeback against the best team in the country in Duke, and you get harassed..thats ridiculous. Who is UK going to hire? Tubby did nothing wrong. His recruiting staff isnt great and they should have been fired but remember Tubby has brought in McDonald All-Americans. They didnt count on guys like Kelenna Azibuike going pro a year early leaving last years team out to dry. They looked lethargic in the last game this year b/c they played a deeper, quicker Kansas team. UK beat Nova when many people said they wouldnt. SO come on, root for the best team in the state who now has the best coach in the state..GO CARDS! I now hate UK 100x more..ridiculously.

When the KY fans and The Boosters Club get dissatified with coach performance, then the coach has to go. It's a shame, but that's the way it is. It's just like big business. When the CEO doesnt' perform up to the standards that the company wants, then they gotta' go, too. Tubby was a very nice man. He will be missed.

He won the championship w/ pitinos guys. The program has gotten worse every year, so why not fire him. Recruiting is the biggest part of coaching. If you can't do that then you shouldn't be a coach at a major program. Nobody will want that high pressure job w/ the state that it is currently in, but they need to make a change.

You must have been a real loyal fan of UK if you jump ship this easily. Tubby left because of the hostile feelings in Lexington. He didn't want to give up his staff so he left. Go be a band wagon jumper because your coach left, not fired, left.

He isn't a tremendous recruiter, but he is a great coach. A lot of kentucky recruits went to kentucky because they wanted to get good coaching from him. This will hurt kentucky in many ways. Some kentucky players might even want to transfer and it will hurt their chances in patrick patterson. Randolph Morris might want to enter draft too. A lot of kentucky players did not be as good as their potential was like rajon rondo. He was a good player, but he was not up to his potential. I think kentucky right now is in deep trouble.

YOU, sir, were obviously not a true-blue Kentucky fan, so quit your whining!
Tubby didn't make it to the final-four this year, and his team looked lethargic in their final game.
It's obviously entirely his fault, and he's doing the right thing.
*NOTE: Sarcasm.*

Maybe he will go back to UGA since he left them high and dry a few years ago for the UK job.
