Even when you click the box to disable your firewalls, they are hard to get rid of. They only hide, they don't go away completely. You need to go into system configuration utility through start-run-msconfig-services and disable them that way. Then restart your computer.

Your firewall is probably blocking MSN.

Also, open Internet Explorer, go to Tools -> Internet Options and click on the Connections tab. From there, click LAN Settings, and make sure you don't have any proxy settings at the "bottom" of the window. Just uncheck those two boxes.

go to your messenger, then go to preferences and change the proxy from the one you have now to a different one, I have to do it all the time to make my messenger work.
