You do not have to tap your creature when you regenerate. The person who told you that just wants to kill you faster. the offical ruleing:
Regeneration is a destruction-replacement effect. "Regenerate [permanent]" means "The next time [permanent] would be destroyed this turn, instead remove all damage from it, tap it, and (if it's in combat) remove it from combat." Because it's a replacement effect, it must be active before the attempted destruction event.

- You can usually play a regeneration ability any time you have priority, and this places a regeneration shield on the permanent. The shield lasts until it is used up, or until the end of the turn. Any permanent can have regeneration shields, not just creatures, and you can make as many shields as you like. Simply activating the regeneration shield does not tap the permanent or remove it from combat - this only happens if an effect actually attempts to destroy that permanent later in the turn after the regeneration shield was put into place. It is called "being regenerated" when this shield gets used up.

- Abilities that trigger from damage being dealt (such as Spirit Link) still trigger even if the permanent regenerates.

- A permanent that is regenerated never hits the graveyard, so abilities that trigger off of it leaving play or coming into play do not occur. All equipment, enchant creatures, and counters remain on the creature when it is regenerated.

found this on the magic web site under rules.

My understanding is that the regeneration ability can be played as the creature is moved from play to the graveyard, at which point it is untapped, then using the regeneration ability taps it. But I may be wrong.

yes you do have to tap it. I didnt no that either for a bit You can regen it again as well. it only comes back into play tapped because some cards have a tap ability as well as regen. YOu can regen it as many times as you want
