I've read this and heard this in multiple places, but I have never entirely understood why, especially if your intent is not to get pregnant in the first place. I just need to understand all of this better.

Thanks.

once you find out or suspect you're pregnant you should stop because the excess hormones are not good for the baby. in some cases the potential effects are not even known for certain, but it poses potential risk to the fetus. why risk it right?

The birth control pill is a potent estrogen.
Lessons were learned with a synthetic estrogen that was given to pregnant women to prevent miscarriage in early pregnancy (DES).
It was later linked to cancer and other conditions in the daughters (and sons) of women who had taken it.

If someone has continued taking the birth control pill, not knowing about the pregnancy, do not be alarmed
In spite of this being a common accident, there is little evidence to suggest that exposure to the hormones in birth control pills causes birth defects.

Once you learn you are pregnant, stop taking the birth control pills.

Why? Because birth control isn't exactly a vitamin supplement for infants!!! In fact, it can cause serious damage. So if you think you are pregnant, stop taking them. If you are planning on aborting, then it doesn't matter if you take them, but it is a little like closing the gate after the wolf is in with the sheep!

To reduce risk of damage to you or the fetus. Yes, I understand that the point was not to get pregnant, but if by chance a person does while on the pill, they should take care of things properly instead of continuing to take the pills.

So the medication doesn't hurt the baby if you are pregnant!!! Even the pill isn't 100% effective, so if it doesn't work, and you do end up pregnant, you don't want to be taking any medication!

Because if you are pregnant and are taking birth control, you will injure or harm the embryo. Your chances of having a deformed or mentally retarded child are at higher risks by using birth control when you are pregnant.

because in some cases, birth control can harm the baby. If you think you are pregnant it is not wise to keep taking your birth control. That's what my ob-gyn says anyway.

Don't start taking birth control if you think you're pregnant. The hormone changes that this cause could cause you to lose a baby.

...because if you are pregnant, it is too late for the pill to stop the pregnancy, but probably not too late for it to cause complications or even defects. That's why you should stop.

It can cause a miscarriage. If you're going to have one of those, the doctors would prefer you to be nearby so that they can induce it themselves, collect your money, and keep you safe.
