You don't have to dress in a suit, but try wearing something that you would wear to see your grandparents. Just be covered up, but fashionable, especially if you want to work in a clothing store. They don't want to hire someone that doesn't have any fashion sense!
Ask if they are hiring and if they are pick up an application. You can fill them out at home with help from your mom & bring them back later when they are filled out. I'ts annoying to have someone standing at the counter filling out applications on the spot & asking questions about how to answer something.

If you're just looking around the mall, you don't need to look extremely professional. You're just asking for applications, not interviewing.
Just go into all the stores you're interested in and ask for the manager. If they say the manager is off duty, then say you'd really like to be considered for employment, and ask for an application. The worst thing they can say is that they're not hiring. They might also say to fill out an application even though they're not hiring, and when something comes up, they'll call you.
Also, apply at places that have "help wanted" signs, even though it might not be your dream store. The work might suck, but it's harder to work at the better stores because they typically like experience, or you have to know someone. I had to work at a really crappy store for a while to get experience, and then I applied at Bath and Body Works, and got the job because I could talk the talk. I loved working there ... so the crappy job is usually worth it.
Also, when you hand in your application, follow-up in about a week if you don't hear anything. Also, always ask for the manager. You might feel like you're being pesky, but the manager is the one who makes the decisions, so you might as well talk to them rather than the sales clerk.
Good luck, and keep an open mind.

Try Lowes or Home Depot! After you fill out your Application, make sure you ask for the manager which Lowes and home depot have a lot of them, so try the customer service manager, and let them know that you filled out the application online, and would really like to work there! Then call them ever 2 to 3 days, to check on the status of your application! I had the same response with retail stores snobby bastards, even after I had 10 years of customer service experience and 5 years of a very successful sales record, they still didn't have any interest! Lowes is a good company and they give decent raises, have a lot of opportunities and flexible schedules for part timers!

A lot of stores may have a "Now Hiring" sign, in the mall I'm sure their a lot more easy about pass experience. But if you know anybody who owns a business (parents friends, family) you could ask them if you could use them as a past job, or use babysitting, volunteer work...anything! But everyone has to have a "first job". Walk in be positive, good attitude, if they don't call you back call THEM so they know you really want the job.
Clothing stores typically pay minimum wage, but if money isn't a factor...

go from store to store asking for applications. Fill them out there if you can. If not, bring them back filled out the next day. The mall is a great place to find a first job. just be polite and friendly when asking for the application.
"Hi, are you guys hiring by any chance?" is always a good way to start. Usually they'll say "We're always accepting applications." So take one, and fill it out. It's not hard. The more you fill out and turn in, the better chance you have at getting a job.
OH! Make sure you know youre social security number, too. That is always on job apps.

I would say that you don't need to dress professional but I would dress nice/ neat more like a dress casual look. Now, you should apply at a lot of places whether they are hiring or not because you never know. After you applying you could find out when the hiring manager will be in. A great tip is to call them, even if you've called them and they say that they get back to you, don't wait long call back. Good luck.

Be honest. Dress as you think you would be expected to dress for the job you apply for. Tell the truth about your 'no experience, need the job, WANT the job'.........expect to work long hours..............if you want to have a part time job, TELL the people who do hire, that. Expect, I think, to work at a cash register, and/or sales person. Apply at stores that you enjoy shopping in, as it will give you a better idea of what is sold, how the prices are, and how people who work there, DO dress. Mervyn's in my area is always hiring new people. Gottschalks is another hiring store. Then, cellular phone stores are usually a good bet at most malls. The other way to approach where you want to apply, is to work at a store that gives really great discounts to the people who work there! I know a lady who works for Ross, a lower priced store, in order to buy all her Christmas gifts for nearly nothing, and to buy her sheets, etc. for herself for such a low price. Look the stores over...........choose, first, and then, if you do not get hired, check out the other stores. Maybe, you could work in a food court, as well.

Professional dress can mean different things at different stores- ie the Gap versus Lord and Taylor. I' d say pay a visit to shops you are interested in and see how the other employees are dressed and use that as a guide, shooting for a middle of the road spot if they vary alot. Even if they are not hiring now, ask if you can fill out an application for future openings- it will show you are very interested and motivated, and they may say okay.
