No, you are not too young. However please understand that you are choosing to write about a period in history and therefore you will have to do a TON of research to have the story be accurate for the period. You will need a very good outline of the story, a good set of character studies and analysis and then a ton of research into the period. That being said, go ahead and write your book. When you are to the point that it is ready for a publisher, come back and ask for info - you are miles away from needing to know about publishers. Step one is to learn everything you can about the Civil War. I have to tell you I am an author and I spend about 5 times as much time on research as I do actually writing my books. You have chosen a tough task, but if you are seriously interested, go for it. You might also want to develop contacts of people who know about the war - historians etc. I have a list of consultants I use for my books - doctors, lawyers, cops, etc. When I need accurate details, I go to the proper consultant and pick his or her brain. Why not start with a short story and see where it goes? Best of luck - Pax - C.

I've published several books on the Civil War. The bad newss is that it is hard to find a new angle on the subject. The good news is that people who are Civil War buffs with read just about anything written on the war, so you two will start with a built-in audience. Other than agreeing with people who tell you to do lots of research, there's not much specific advice I can give you without knowning more about your topic.

Wow! Great job taking the initiative to write a book, and at such a young age. Do lots and LOTS of research. Check out movies and books from your library. Watch for specials on the history channel and PBS. Have several teachers, adults, and kids read it and give their opinions and help with the grammar/spelling, etc. Writing a book at such a young age should be a great "gimmick" for getting it published. Talk to your language arts teachers about how to send it in to publishers. Good luck :)

I would start by going to either the public or your school library and checking out several books on the Civil War. If you want it like a history type book, you'll need lots of facts, if it's sort of a short story then you'll need to read more on characters, and if it's a picture book, you'll need a mix of both facts and characters.
