many supermarkets used to leave huge stacks of old cardboard boxes by the checkouts for costumers to use for their shopping.

why do you think this practise was banned on safety grounds?

I can't think of a chemical reason, maybe it was a safety issue - too many people were tripping over them!?

You can still get cardboard boxes from grocery stores if you ask, they store them in the back.

It has always been known as a Fire Hazard, i didnt notice they stopped doing it though.
