Carpal tunnel syndrome develops when a large nerve — the median nerve — is compressed inside your wrist. This nerve controls feeling in your thumb, index finger and thumb side of the ring finger. The median nerve also controls the muscles at the base of your thumb. The condition gets its name from the eight carpal bones that surround the median nerve in your wrist, forming a tunnel to your hand.
The tunnel is just big enough for the median nerve and several tendons to run through it. Anything that makes the tunnel smaller (such as arthritis) or makes the tendons larger (such as thickening of the tendon linings) can cut off the circulation to the nerve. When this happens, you notice pain, numbness and tingling in your fingers.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful progressive condition caused by compression of a key nerve in the wrist. It occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. Symptoms usually start gradually, with pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm. As symptoms worsen, people might feel tingling during the day, and decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks. In some cases no direct cause of the syndrome can be identified. Most likely the disorder is due to a congenital predisposition - the carpal tunnel is simply smaller in some people than in others. However, the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome is especially common in those performing assembly line work.
I have this in my two wrists as well so I can sympathize in your pain. There is an operation that can help however! There are alot of people getting the operation just at the place where I work ,so you can imagine how common this is.

varies from person to person. If you are experiencing any of the following, you should ask a doctor about it: shooting pain from elbow to wrist tingling sensation in hands or fingers cramping in the hand wrist pain inability to make a fist Any tingly or numb feeling anywhere from the finger tips to the elbow. Chances are that if you spend a lot of time on the computer or other equipment with similar wrist and forarm usage and you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you probably have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Here's an interesting note I found. Patients with Carpal Tunnel often have a Vitamin B deficiency. Try to up your intake of Vitamins B6 and B12. And obviously, if at all possible, improve the ergonomics of your working environment. Just google "prevent carpal tunnel" and you will find many suggestions. Good luck!

don't know much about it but I used to work for a neurosurgeon that corrected carpal tunnel. I know that the symptoms usually wake you up at night with pain. That's a big indicator.
