And does Paps have any legal recourse if he does get hurt considering the doctors said he should be a starter.

Noone is to blame.

Papelbon worked all off-season to strengthen his shoulder.
He is also willing to retake the closer spot. And happy to do so to boot. He's a team guy and this move really solidifies the Red Sox pitching staff.

And, as far as Theo not getting a "top-flight" closer...it's slim pickings out there and the couple of inquiries made were absolutely lopsided deals with the Sox giving up more than it would be worth. Not to mention they already had one of the best closers in the game already on their team.

Would this be a "Pap Smear?"

Seriously, no. He wouldnt have any recourse. He's just as likely to get injured as a starter anyway. It's his job to pitch. If he's worried about injury, he can hang 'em up or go play for the Mets or something where it wont be competitive. Now a few years ago, the doctor/trainer for the Red Sox was also an owner. I believe he made some medical decisions based upon being an owner and not necessarily as a doctor. I believe he messed up Tom Gordon and a few other players. I would say THAT is very close to actionable.

No doctor said he should be a starter, those are just opinions and rumors. Paps was a starter until last season. No one person can be blamed for him getting hurt. He wants to be a starter but is best suited to be a closer to help the team. Can't blame the skipper for making his team the best he can make it. Paps will be a team player and close for as long as he is needed. No one to Blame there.

No. I am sure he agreed to the change to help the team. That is the difference between a great player and a crybaby. His arm will be fine, and he will produce again this year. His .093 ERA was no mistake. I am sure he has no legal recourse if he were to get hurt again. He is under contract.

Chow!!

Genius, do you Honestly think Papelbon would want to close if he thought he would get injured again? Like i told you before...because you believe everything the Red Sox say, does not make you smart..it just makes you gullable. He is back where he belongs, and will be one of the best Closers in game. I honestly think they asked him to close again... they'll never ADMIT that, but all along he wants to be a starter and then one day he ups and wants to close again...dont buy it. I think they saw what they had and realized it wasnt enough andasked him to do it. If he does get injured though, i dont think it is anyones "fault"...i mean, he was a rookie, he had never closed before, his arm wasnt ready for it and just gave out after awhile.. i would imagine they strengthened it all off season and i bet he will be just fine. Stick Piniero in his spot in rotation and be done with it.

Why does someone have to blamed? Players play what position their manager tells them to, and they get hurt all time. The job of an individual on a team is to do whatever is needed to make the team the best it can be. And that is exactly what he is doing.

I'm sure he doesnt have any legal recourse. He's supposed to fill whatever roll the team needs him to fill. I still think for Boston's sake, they should start him and not waste his potential, but I really couldnt care less.

my opinion is that he should be in no way a starter....sorry he is clearly a closer and that's that. He doesn't have the stamina to go 100 pitches. He does have the nerves to handle clutch situations.

Papelbon is the one who said he wanted to close. So if he gets hurt, then he is to blame.

Theo, 'cuz of his unwillingness to trade
prospects for an established closer. He had plenty of chances.
