Television ratings have been designed to assist parents/guardians in determining which shows may be inappropriate for children. What are the limitations of the current television ratings? Why are they inadequate (or adequate, depending on your perspective)? How might ratings alter television content?

Good question. But the funny thing is...

When you block a channel due to content and the kid knows how to reprogram the remote to un-block it and view the station.

I dont believe in the rating system at all. With the violence that goes on everyday and whats in the news I'm surprised that kids aren't scared to death. But, it tends to have an opposite effect THEY BECOME MORE VIOLENT

Limitations: kids will watch what they want when their parents aren't around.

Inadequate: each person has different ideas of what is objectionable

Alter content: writers may change scripts so that they do not have material that will give them a bad rating, which will then expose them to more viewers, but could negatively affect the storyline.

So, what, is this for an Intro to Soc class?

In dissimilar approaches. first of all from volunteers who're given a container that tracks what they are watching, secondly via journals or 'diaries' voluteers fill out approximately what they have watched, and thirdly from records offered from third events which includes DirecTV. all the innovations is prepare and creates an fairly precise image of what the country as an entire is watching. i think in case you google for Nielsen rankings they'll clarify all of it to you on their internet site
