Okay, let me try to explain the situation. I am relatively new at my job (I've only been here 3 months). We had an internet tool come in. I asked one of my coworkers, who was recently promoted to a senior level position, if we needed to check it. She told me no. This happened a few days ago. Suddenly today she's totally freaking out that it was never checked and worried that the boss is going to yell. I like my coworker. She is a work friend. But...if the boss does catch wind of this (which she most likely will) do I cover my own butt and tell my boss that I had asked my coworker about it and was told not to worry about it. Or...do I take the heat along with my coworker to protect my friendship (she is my only work friend here).
Thanks in advance!

Since my coworker is in a "senior" position, one above me - she is my superior and the one I am to direct my questions to.

Business is business. You tried to help her but she refused. It is not your fault, do not mince words just continue to be honest like you have already.

you should cover your own butt and tell your boss for many reasons :
1- this is the truth. you are not going to lie, what will you tell him is totally the truth
2- you have been in this job for only 3 months, so i believe that you cannot treat this coworker as a close friend. especially that she did not ( when she answered you: No)
3- you are new worker, you will not improve if you start taking the heats alone
4- usually coworkers don't decide about keeping your job or not, it is the boss responsibility so be honest with yourself and with him.

This co-worker is not longer on the same level as you. She is in a senior level position so it is logical that you would go to her for answers. She gave you the wrong answer, and it's her fault. You don't want bad blood so I wouldn't bring it up, but if the boss asks you have to tell the truth.

You should have asked a superior(yours), not your coworker just because she is your friend. I wouldn't tell your boss she told you it was all right, it wasn't her responsibility to clue you in. It was your boss's responsibility. If he corners you tell him that he or whoever else trained you on the tool did not not tell you you needed to check it.

That's a very personal question so I can't tell you what I would do in your shoes (not having worn them).
A recommendation if I may: Give your co-worker the opportunity to take the heat. She may step up, saving you the choice and helping your friendship.

first thing is dont trust anybody at work they will back stab you to keep there job friend or no frind it was her fault and if they ask you questions just say you dont know .and being that your new sometimes you get blamed for everything cause your new ,she might turn around and tell them you made the mistake cause your new so watch who you think your friends are ..just do your job and keep the gossip limited or else you'll no longer have a job trust me i see company bs all the time just from co workers gossiping to one another.it happens at all jobs

Take the heat with the rest of them. Bosses like team players and your senior level co-worker will appreciate your willingness to not be an "I-told-you-so".

You asked, she gave you bad advice. Tell that to the manager and just say "you know I really screwed up, I should have come to you in the first place, and double checked what XXX told me to do, it won't happen again". Typically if you can admit your mistake, they will go easy. But you do need to state your gut instinct was to do something else.

You have only known her for three months....do you think she will cover for you if the shoe was on the other foot...I don't think so !!...In fact, she will most probably...blame... you for it !!...Save your own **s, you will make many more friends when you reach her position, but...learn from her mistakes !!
The truth is...always best especially when it comes to your job...
