I have some betta fries that seem to like sitting on the bottom of the tank they seem to have a problem swimming to the top of the tank for air, my tank has only 5 inches of water in it, my fries are about two months old and some of them are still really small, the fries that are sitting on the bottom of the tank could they have a swimbladder disease or is there something else wrong with them. The PH and Ammonia levels are alright, so what could be the problem.

Most likely their labrinyth oragans and swim bladders did not properly develop. This happens to some from most any spawn. The smallest and those that can't swim properly are usually culled away by about this time. It's just part of breeding bettas.

It's also time to start slowing increasing the water depth, maybe an inch a week or so until the tank is full. By then they should also be ready for a regular filter.

If they are two months old then there doesn't seem to be problem--they're still alive. Bettas, I recall, have two methods for breathing--perhaps not at the same time though. My thought is that perhaps they are BORN breathing through a gill apparatus, then DEVELOP into the air-breathing organs. After all, if they had to swim at the top as fry, they would be far more susceptible to being eaten, so maybe evolution protects them at a young age.

Betta fish require just as much water and as large as a tank as regular fish. They are also carnivores but the cruel pet store industry has told people that they can live in these ridiculous conditions.

Pet stores say bettas don't need much oxygen, but that's not true. They don't need as much DISSOLVED oxygen but they need as much o2 as other fish.

And since they are carnivores the "diet" of plants makes them slowly starve to death. Take them out of that enclosure asap and into a regular fish tank - PETA HAS AN EXCEPTIONAL WEBSITE FOR THIS don't worry the website won't make you feel guilty.

It's not your fault; pet stores give bad info when it comes to "exotic" pets, which is why people should buy lizards and fish from shelters or people who no longer want them.

Well, I had fish two times before & it happpened to me. Firstly, you have to give them air in the tank by using that thing that i forgot its name. Then, if this didnt work you can ask their doctor about it. If they were alright maybe the tank is small or there are many fish so you have to buy a bigger tank. ^^'''

they should be fine, betas don't need to go to the top of the tank for air. once they get a little older they'll probably become more active.
