I'll be visiting Vegas in July for my bday w/friends and want to know the difference between staying at a hotel on the strip vs. downtown. I want to check out El Cortez hotel which is downtown or Tuscany Suites or the Flamingo which are strip hotels. What's the difference in the two? I've heard downtown Vegas is scary and dirty where as the strip can be bad but more tolerable than downtown. What's your opinion and have you stayed at any of these hotels?

Also...how far is the strip from downtown. I don't mind staying at a downtown hotel and trekking to the strip to gamble and party.

First off since you plan on going in July I though I would let you know there are some very good rates from July 15th - 27th.

If you go Sunday through Thursday you will save a lot of money.

The El Cortez is downtown but it's not in the main hotel cluster on Fremont it's about 2 blocks East. The El Cortez has some of the lowest room rates in LV. The rooms are clean but nothing opulent. They do have some of the better meal deals and the very best inexpensive steakhouse "Roberta's" in LV. The EC is also one of the very best places to play video poker. If you are a player it, it takes very little play to get future offers for free rooms.

Tuscany is not on the strip, it's about 3/4 of a mile East of the strip on Flamingo. The rooms are all oversized and layed out more in a villa style rather than the usual tower arrangement of most LV hotels. The do have a nice casino, but nothing special in the way of games.

The Flamingo sits just about dead center on the LV strip. One of the nice things about the Flamingo is, if you go when it's slow, it's very easy to upgrade to a nicer room. Not that their Deluxe rooms are not nice they are, but the "GO" rooms are very nice. The Swimming pool(s) actually 4 pools spread out over 15 acres, this is one of the great pools in LV.

Some options for you:

If you choose a slow time to go you might check on the rates at the Luxor, it's one of my favorites and they have the best promotion rates of any four star hotel on the strip. You can go to their web site and sign up for e-mail updates, you will begin getting promo offers right away.

The least expensive hotel on the strip that's still a very nice place is the Stratosphere. It does sit on the far North end of the strip, a lot of people don't like the location, which makes it all the better for us bargain hunters.

If you would like to stay in a very nice hotel downtown, this is my favorite.

the tuscany suites is a few blocks off the strip. The flamingo is on the strip, and the el cortez is on the outskirts of downtown. the el cortez is really old and away from alot of things. The downtown area is nice, but older. The best place to stay downtown is the golden nugget. All of the hotels are close together and they have freemont street blocked off so you can just walk around, drink, and have a good time. Also, it is more affordable. Staying on the strip is fun, but everything is spread out, alot of people, and very expensive. The flamingo is nice but a little older. It is in the middle of everything which is nice. So it really depends on what you want to do. If you are there and won't really be in the room, downtown is nice, but you will have to get to the strip and back if you go. But if you really are looking for a high class room, stay on the strip somewhere... but beware, the prices can change from week to week and get expensive if something is in town...

El Cortez is at the edge. I liked staying there pre-moving here but the crowd turns some people off. Tuscany not exactly on Strip and not that great. Buses run to Strip (3 miles to beginning) every 15 min so easy. I would stay ar El Cortez but be ready for whiners if your friends are into fancy. Four Queens or another downtown a little more upscale but not as cheap. I always did the $25 original 1941 rooms just above the EL C casino. Classic Vegas. Enjoy + feel free to contact via answers for more info.

Las Vegas is probably the most fascinating and entertaining city on the planet and with hotelbye you will see out more. Nowhere else on earth you will find an area that has all the journey amenities that only a complete resort destination can offer: lavish casino accommodations, fine eating, great stay entertainment and state-of-the artwork meeting and trade show facilities. Las Vegas is surely a spectacular city and exactly what you would assume from the world-class town, and more, is the following for your vacation pleasure. One of many areas you must visit in Las Vegas may be the Fremont Street, a pedestrian area with a myriad of unique sites.

the cortez is out of downtown as well. so it all depends on what you want to do while you are there. if its your first time pony up the extra cash and get on the strip. you can stay for a resonable price if you book early about 300 for a weekend. and everything is on the strip and there is a shuttle that runs from fremont all the way down to the luxor so you dont have to worry about getting around just plan on 5 bucks a day for the shuttle. and if you want to see a show get the tickets now as they sell out and if you dont fit it in you will not go. make sure you have extra money above and beyond what you think you will need for food and keep that seperate from your gambling money. and remember the folks at the hotel will be your best resource for your first time for deals and local fun.

I went for the first time last October and though I stayed on the strip, we went downtown to check out the light show on Fremont. It didn't do anything for me. I much prefer the strip. If you are going to stay downtown, my friends who go quite often recommend the Fitzgerald and the Golden Nugget.
Though I didn't go in the Flamingo, I haven't heard great things about that or the Imperial. I stayed at the Tropicana last time and this next time I am going because I got steal of a deal rates and I want to say I stayed there before it is the next one to fall.

The strip for sure. I would stay further down the strip at the Monte Carlo, NY, NY, MGM, or Mandalay Bay, but the Flamingo is a pretty cool, older hotel that is close to a lot of action, including the Mirage and the Venetian (if I remember correctly).

HAVE FUN but bring lots of swim suits as July will be around 120 degrees!

I prefer staying downtown for the older feel. The strip is where the fun is, though.

I live here email me and ask me anything. I prefer the strip but can give you other tips. On the strip you can walk safely at night. Lots of cops and well lit. Party central pretty much. In July it will be over 100 degrees in the evening. But it feels good.

It depends on what your looking for, I go a couple of times a year. I stay at Harrahs which is fun and theres lots going on in and around there, but I also stay at the Fremont which is older and smaller. I used to live in Hawaii and they pretty much cater to the Hawaiians at Fremont and California Hotels. Both places are fun, old town is cheaper, you can always do both.
