I bought an cheap bagged vaccume at sears and put an extended 2 year replacement guarantee on it for $25. That came to a total of $75 for a vaccume guaranteed to last for 2 years. Best thing I did. I was buying vacumes every 6 months at $200 +/- a pop. Forget the bagless...such a hassle.

I will have to tell you that the Dyson DC15 the animal is the best on the market!! It has super suction for picking up animal hair but I don't have any pets and bought it anyway because it was recommended to me by a friend. I was a little hesitant about the price because it costs about $500 but after using it I swear it is the best. It has a five year warranty so it is a good investment. I feel like it cut my vacuum time in half because I don't have to keep going over the same spot!! Only thing I will warn you about is be prepared because you will not believe how much dirt it will pick up off your floors, even in areas you think are clean!!

We have a in the wall Nutone system that is 29 years old last week. It has never required a repair.

We did have to get to get a new beater bar about 15 years ago.

It has always worked great on tile, hardwood and carpeting.

I have a blue shark vac from sears that I've had for about five years now. It still works like new. I have carpet and hard wood floors and I don't even own a broom b/c this vacuum is so awesome. It's a canister vac so you can also clean curtains and stuff too.

The Kenmore Progressive line of vacuum cleaners at Sears always has a high rating from Consumer Reports. We have one, and it works very well, and we've had it for about four years now.

If you have pets and lots of pet hair---go and shop and read about the vac---pet hair can kill a vac in a heartbeat if it is not rated for fine nasty stuff. I had an Electrolux that lasted for 23 years, spendy but good. In that time frame it became cheap. So many choices and so little time.

I use Hoover Windtunnel and love it. The suction is much better than others. I've always used on hard floors too.
