It is worth to invest on a David Ortiz card because he's a great hitter.

Ortiz has been great the last couple years but he was worthless the first half of his career. Let's compare his stats to a couple bonifide first ballet hall of famers.

Ortiz is 32 years old and has 231 career home runs.
A Rod is the same age, and he has 464 home runs.
Pujols is 5 years younger and has 250.
Even Aramis Ramirez of the Cubs is 3 years younger but has only 35 less homers.

Ortiz is brilliant - one of the most fun guys to watch the last couple years, but unless he plays until he's 40, his career numbers will not get him into the Hall.

As far as the baseball card goes, kids nowadays play video games. They don't collect baseball cards any more. It's probably not a great investment IMO.

I dont see his card being of great value... His name has blown up the past couple years and he has showed he is a great clutch performer. His personality and way he goes about the game with respect is rare, but him getting to the hall of fame on his stats will be tough, especially as a dh, his card will probably drop off and be a mediocre card at best.

Not at all. The DH has become a very important role in the American League lineup, and it will not disappear any time soon. Why?? Because it has been so successful by bringing more excitement to the game. Ortiz so far is the greatest among all DH's. His card will someday be worth money.

Chow!!

cards are so mass produced and common now, the value has nothing to do with their talent anymore. the reason all those old cards like mantles, and banks and so on worth so much is because there aren't too many of them left in the world. ortiz cards are a dime a dozen. the value is pretty much made by the card maker and the value will never go up greatly until 90% of the cards produced are thrown away.

Yes, it is worth it to invest in his rookie cards. One in particular would be his fleer rookie, with his real name, David Arias on it. Its a relatively rare card and if you can get your hands on one for a decent price, I would definitely grab it. And for Jason L, you are right, kids do not collect baseball cards as much as they used to. But the adults are the ones buying the cards because of how expensive they are. Cards are printed in limited quantity now, and if you are lucky, you can get a card that is very valuable. For those that think no one collects baseball cards anymore, just take a look at Ebay. Cards are one of the top products bought and sold on Ebay today.

For those of you that are saying baseball cards are mass produced and the cards are so common now, you are wrong. That was the case from the mid 80's to the mid 90's. Cards now are so limited that cards from 2006-2007 are worth more than cards from 60's, 70's, and 80's. Just look at Ebay if you don't believe me.

It's not really an investment for you if you buy them. Baseball cards are so mass produced that the supply exceeds demand by far. They might be worth something for you grandchildren or great grandchildren once vast quantities get lost and destroyed over time. David Ortiz will definately be a hall of famer, so his position has no bearing on the value.

Do not invest in baseball cards bad money spent. If a player messes up later, does drugs, steriods, beats his wife, gambles and any sort of not socially accepted activity his card goes down and you lose.

Invest in the card by all means. He is the best clutch hitter of our generation and before his career is over he will lead the Red Sox to more Series titles. A sure bet to go to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot.
