I work at Lands' End. I am an "Outfitter". It is totally acceptable and expected for men to wear ties even with their striped/checked dress shirts. The tie generally should be a solid color. (Tip: Try to wear a tie that will bring out the least dominant color in the checked shirt)

A checkered shirt demands a solid colored tie and a striped shirt demands either a small patterned tie or a solidly colored one.

You can! Just make sure the tie is a solid color from the choice of colors in the shirt...

Normally? No
HOWEVER - it can be done - but gotta be savvy to carry it off...if you are not - stay with what works. Understated dark tie on a white or pastel solid DRESS shirt. (Collar designed to carry a tie)

I see newscasters and sportscasters with ties and patterned shirts, so I guess anything goes. Just keep the colors semi-coordinated and you should be ok.
