nothing has happened yet and the unit has enough area around for venting but some say to return it and get another newer one or have the unit stand vertically...your thoughts?

Keep the ps3

they dont all overheat, its a rare problem and it normally happens to people who dont give it enough ventilation, but it sounds like you have given it enough space

in the rare chance that it overheats, then its free to send back and get a new one

I have had my PS3 for about three months now and haven't had one problem with overheating....and I've played mine in excess of 12 hours at a time as long as you can get air flow into the system you will be fine....i always keep my vertical unless I'm afraid it mite get knocked over i read somewhere that standing it vertically will help reduce overheating.....i would relax you will prolly never have a problem with overheating and do NOT NOT NOT NOT buy a cooling fan or inter cooler b/c they void the warranty and they do not work that well

hey dont sweat it. just go to a store where they sell gaming accessories, and get a cooling fan for ur ps3. i got one and it works just fine. the price range is between 25-40 dollars. until u do, just limit how many hours u play. that puppy is workin with some power under the hood, so its to be expected. its no different than the tower of ur computer needing some air... good luck and enjoy the system!

I work in a used game store and test PS3s when people bring them in to sell to us...they just run HOT . personally I wouldnt but anything from Sony within the first year of production as they have a nasty little habit of releasing things they know to be defective(like the first playstations...and Ps2s when they first came out-not to mention my sony cellphone..grr)...and just fixing it in production...but yeah good luck on yours.
