I don't know how it's properly pronounced in Farsi, though in Arabic it's "eh-rahn," and I assume they're pretty similar if not the same.

It drives me nuts when people say "I ran" and "I Rack." Iraq should be pronounced "ih-raq" - the Arabic "qaaf" is the last letter, and it sounds like a clucking sound in the back of the mouth.

I know this answer for a fact from my friend who is from Iran. Do not say "I ran" as if it were a past tense sentence!
It is prounounced E-Rahn,
like the E in eat and the long sound A, like if you stick out your tongue and say aaaaaaa, and like the a in Mama.

Either one is acceptable. I think (not sure) the media says "Ir-ran" because "I-ran" may remind people of "I ran to the store or something like that." Just my two cents...

Pronouncing it as 'i'-ran is the american form of pronounciation of the word but the word itself is not american or english. its an arabic or persian word, i think and there's no letter with an 'i' pronounciation in any word in those languages. the basic arabic language, for example has three basic sounds which are "Aah, Eeh, Ooh".. there's no 'i'
