Dear Nite Cap: Lincoln was too poor to have slaves. His father was a dirt farmer and Abe himself was self-educated. On the other hand, his wife's family did own slaves and it was a sore point in their family relations.

No, Abraham Lincoln never had slaves. He lived in Illinois and slavery was not allowed there during his time in that state.

No, First of all he lived in the North (Illinois) when he was an Adult. The North made owning slaves illegal. Second, wile he was in New Orleans he saw a slave Auction and hated the whole idea. He said it in his memoirs.
