I have a gateway computer with a v.92 56k modem. everytime I restart my computer and try to sign on to my ISP it says modem in use. When I go to the control panel under phone and modem options it says my modem is not present. The only way to get it back is to delete it then restart the computer and windows recognizes the new hardware and installs it. Does anyone know what the problem is?? I have this problem evertime I try to get online when I start-up my computer. I have windows XP

ok well theres a couple answers to this

one is to make sure another program is not set up to connect
Try looking in the internett connections folder in the control panel (internet Options Connections tab). See if it says "Never dial a number" or not. and check in your Internet explorer
Always manually connect to the net on Dial up

You may also have spyware dialer trying to connect
You may need to update your drivers
Reasons could be one or all of the above

Phones or fax machines on the same line as the modem can create problems.

there is a very big problem with this type of modem you need to update it's driver to fix the problem. Then you need make sure the modem is properly tightly installed in it's socket.
