I have seen this term used in here, and I am somewhat confused as to what that is. I have a general idea, and I think the subject is quite interesting. Just looking for a little more information about the subject. Like, how do you know if someone is one? Things like that. I'm just very curious about the topic, not trying to offend anyone.

Mistress has more than one meaning some not so nice. Historically Mistress was the lady of the house to her servants, this is before Mrs. came into general use. She was also an older mature unmarried women (daughter) of the house.
She was an unmarried woman with higher position, born before her time she excelled in business without need for a husband. She may also be single and kept as though married, by a man married to another. Reliable birth control was not available and It was common for these women to bear the children of the man "keeping" her.
Modern day usage is a woman married or single who is meeting for companionship and sexual purposes with a man married to another woman. It is said to be an affair exclusive to the person, either man or woman, who is married. Example...a married man dating and having sex with a woman either married or single is having an affair. If the woman he is carrying on with is NOT married she is NOT having an affair, however if she is married she is also said to be having an affair. Men, married or not, still "keep" women, paying all her expenses with her being available to him when ever he wants her. The woman being kept in this manner calls the man a "sugar daddy".
It is usually impossible to tell if a woman is a mistress, to know for certain you would have to be a personal friend or a damn nosy neighbor. I hope I didn't further confuse you.

To my knowledge, modern day definiton of a mistress is someone who plays the role of the "other" woman. If a man cheats on his wife, the one he is cheating with is a mistress.

But older terminolgy was that a mistress is the feminine form of Master. To be the mistress & master of a household.

Well, to me, anyway, a mistress is a woman who sees a married man and the man basically 'keeps' her, in many instances, pay her bills, rent, etc.

Well I'm a swap. A mistress is a person who owns you and makes you her slave. You have to do what she says to give you both pleasure. I am greedy and like being both slave and mistress with various partners. Don't do relationships just the passion. If you need to know more email me.

That greatly depends on your diffinition of the order of the answer. lol There are several meanings. Some are sexual in nature, and others are more of a position of power and control. That's one of those things that depends on how YOU want to percieve it as being good, bad, or indifferant.
