The short answer is they are 1 in the same.
An iPod is the brand / model of the MP3 player made by Apple Inc. And iPod will also do other things these days like play videos, picture slideshows, games, etc.
There are other MP3 players out there that do much less and some that do much more. It just depends on if you have to have one that says iPod on the front.
If you wanted to get really technical, you could say your computer is an MP3 player since it can play the files as well. So just think of it as a Sony Walkman. Even though it was just a tape player back in the day, everyone referred to any portable tape player as a Walkman. Brand names rule the world!

The only difference between an ipod and an mp3 player is the ipod is the brand name for apple's mp3 player. The ipod is also a mp3 player. Like sony ericsson brand their w series phones as walkman players.

Purely on aesthetic terms, the iPod has not changed much in overall design from the original 1st Gen Model. How many "Lifestyle" products have been so successful for this long, without a yearly "non-functional" make-over?

Why would you spend $200 on an iPod, when you can get a decent MP3 for half that? Sure, they can hold a lot of songs, but seriously, do you need 10,000 songs??? People just want them for the name.
