Meccano. (Erector in the U.S.)
It taught me the basics of engineering, & also fed the imagination by enabling the construction of my own prototype machines & inventions. I still use it occasionally when working through an idea. Not bad for a 50 odd year-old toy. (my own personal set that is, the origin is much older.)
Invented in Liverpool, England, by Frank Hornby, the first sets were named: 'Mechanics Made Easy' (est: 1898) changing to 'Meccano' in 1907.
