Maybe not ALWAYS in control, but yes I think that everybody is ultimately responsible for their own destiny. There's roadblocks, but it all just depends on how you handle them.

I agree with the first answer that no one is in control of their destiny.

You can say: "Well I'm going to do this, or do that." and it's not all pre-determined for me. But you might never be able to do what you want, you could get hit by a bus and killed tomorrow... so that would mean you weren't in control, since you never got to fulfil your 'destiny'.

You can control some things, but not everything. Ultimately, no one knows what's in store for them.

We are all in control of our reactions to others, and to events, and choices, and how we spend our time, but obviously we are rarely in control of events that happen. But other people ARE often in control of events.
That said, it is also true that all roads lead back Home. There is nowhere else to go, because we've never actually left Home. The journey is a necessary illusion.

I'm aware that we aren't in complete control, but we aren't a victim of various forces either. We make an impact on everything we experience. There's always that sense of chaos and unpredictablity, but that doesn't mean we are social fodder.Read "Chaos:Making a New Science" or any other book on chaos theory.Read about existentialism also, like Kierkegaard,Nietzsche,Sartre,Camus,Solomon,
De'Beauvoir,etc.

To be in control of the helm of your ship doesn't always mean you can accurately predict were you will end up, but to release a grip of that wheel because of that is completely foolish, and deadly. To want "all or nothing" is childish.
Like religion who claims to know it all, and modern philosophers who claim we can never know anything, both are fools. The mature perspective is: what exactly do we know? And what can we do with that knowledge to support our values?

You are in control of you actions, your toughts and the way you live your life, but there are multiple things that change the way you live, think and act, things you can or can't control. Like weather, economic and social phenomenons that affect our way of living.

You only have one destiny, the one that's being walked, step by step, in he course of our lives.

there is no such thing as destiny, or fate, or any of that self deluding romantic sentiment. nothing decides how your life is gonna be, but your own actions and decisions.

I hope you're not referring to the "God has a plan for all of us!" BS becasue if you are, I feel terribly sorry for you. If you are referring to something else, I guess I can agree. I think our destiny is completely decided by our genetics, and our childhood because every aspect of our personality is derived from these things and it therefore affects everything we do afterward.
