It has nothing to do with when the theatrical versions are released. Theatrical releases capitalize on the 'end of the week, lets go out, its the weekend' thing. CD's & DVD's are released on tuesdays as a business/marketing move to get people into the stores earlier in the week. Its not monday because shipping/receiving on a retail level happens during that day. Its an attempt to balance regular, higher weekend traffic and slower early/mid week traffic.

The reason that movies are released then is prolly because Monday is the first of the week and plus movies come out in theaters on Thursday and Friday. So they just picked Tuesday to release them in stores.

Probably because new movies come out in theaters on Friday, so it gives a couple of days to release new DVD's.

New movies hit the theatres on wednesdays and Fridays and Thursdays are too close to the weekends.
