For use in labor itself...a ponytail holder or some kind of hairclip to keep the hair out of your face. Pack three in case you throw the first two across the room at the baby's father.

You can't put it in a bag, but I found hot showers essential for nice laboring. Had a natural childbirth - I'd say having a commitment to that is another good thing to have in your bag. The more medical intervention they set you up for, the more you'll need :)

During labour? A hairband, there was nothing more irritating than having your hair flop in the way of that precious gas and air. Or if you're having an epidural, a good book!!!
I think I'm coming down in favour of the hairband, the midwives are good for a bit of chat (I hope your birthing partner is too!!!) to pass the time...

Believe me on this...all you'll need is an outfit for you and your baby to go home in...WHY...because you wont need anything that you have packed! I looked up so many different things on what to pack to the hospital and what i didnt need and so on. When i got to the hospital i didnt even touch my bag at ALL...the hospital basically has everything you need...Unless you feel very uncomfotable being away from your own pillows or things then you should pack some stuff....I am pretty uncomfortable about using other peoples stuff too...but when you are there in the hospital...believe me you wont be thinking about anything...except having your baby...

Well what can you really use during labor other than your favorite pillow (hospital pillows suck), or maybe some music. Most of the stuff you need is for when its all over. One thing I recommend for after is your own sanitary pads, again hospital ones no good, they are like wearing a diaper and a few inches thick.

I didn't use a thing out of my bag. Matter of fact, my bag wasn't even opened until an hour before I left the hospital. I take that back....I used my toothbrush.
I took my back massager thing but labor went so fast I didn't even get to use it. The only thing I needed during labor was my husband to feed me ice chips and the doctor there to catch the baby! Oh and the epidural guy....but I could have done without him too.

I put a bag of change in mine. It was for the car park and so that my husband could keep in contact with family who were waiting anxiously at home! Also a list of phone numbers in case the midwives won't let you turn on a mobile to out numbers.

Warm Socks (labor rooms are cold)
Lip Balm (chapped lips from breathing techniques)
Something to do (book,game,music)
Your favorite Maxi-pad
