hi TFC

can you afford this as a single parent? it's more expensive than an external USB memory card reader !

to make it simple, all what you need is a WIRELESS router. no, you haven't to call your ISP for setting it up, you can do it yourself, even without my help by e-mail !
the package with the wireless router contain a step by step description how to set it up.

this is the wireless router i suggest to go for

one point to mention, i know you haven't a CD drive so the delivered CD seems useless for you. no fear, this CD is USELESS. it's very easy to setup the wireless connection without this CD, but i suppose only again with my help by e-mail :-)))

Okay, first of all. The "built in modem" is ONE way to connect to the internet by connecting a standard telephone cord to the matching port on the back of your laptop. You are confusing this with a WIRELESS connetion, which is a built in wireless adaptor (in most, but not all Dell laptops). Check if you have one of these. Go to "Start", Control Panel, and see if you have a wireless network setup icon.

The other issue is where is your internet connection coming from? Do you already have a cable or DSL internet service installed in your house? If you do, you can get a WIRELESS ROUTER to transmit your internet connection thoughout your house so you can use your laptop the way you described. If you don't understand how to do this, you should call you local internet provider (I happen to use SBC-Yahoo DSL in my city) and ask them to install it for you.

Built in modem is different then built in wireless. If your are talking about a modem that plugs into the telephone line then yes you can get it anywhere around your house as long as you have a very long cord.
If you a refering about a built in wireless connection them you do need to have a wireless router.
If you do not have a wireless router then you can get a wireless card and router and then walk around your house wire free.

Your laptop does have a built in wireless device, you do not need to buy anything for the pc....

But for your computers to all share an internet connection, you need to purchase a router. You can get one of these at any Wal-Mart or Best Buy....

If you have never used a router, find the 800 number that comes with the router's instructions, and they will help you set it up.....

No , the modem is for connecting a telephone line. To use the wireless, you need a router that supports wireless and a wireless card for your laptop.

You need one of these

and of these for your laptop

You connect your high speed modem to the router, then use the usb adapter or card for your laptop.

Your ISP won't be able to set it up for you unless you have a wireless router. Although, they may sell you a wireless gateway (router and modem in one) and then send someone out to connect it for you, but the service fee will probably be high.

Since you have the wireless card already, just consider buying a cheap wireless router. They are usually not TOO hard to setup yourself. They normally come with a manual or a CD that has the manual on it.
