my 1996 ford ranger is making a very loud noise every so often. The noise only seems to happen when I am not pushing the gas. It is very loud, I can hear it inside the car and outside. It is obviously coming from the front of the truck. I recently had the truck taken to a mechanic for a diffrent issue, and they did not say anything about a noise when they were running a diagnostics of the car. I think this may be because the truck doesnt make the noise when the gas is being pressed. If anyone has any idea about what this noise may be, or a possible fix for the problem is please help me out.

Another Question:

The belt behind the fan in the engine is also very whiney. If I spray it with belt dressing it seems to stop whining for a while but does start up again. Is there any other way to correct this?

Thanks for your help.

the noise is not a clunking noise. its more of a whining, high ptiched noise. if that helps

Sounds like the tension pulley might be going. I just had to replace mine when the bearings dryed out, froze up and broke the belt. Search on the web for a belt diagram and it should indicate the pulley locations for your vehicle. Check out the pulleys your belt goes on and see if any are stiff, bearings are wearing etc. (Please make sure your engine is OFF).

need more info on the noise you're hearing. Is it a clunk noise???? What kind of noise is it. Also for the belt. Belt dressing is crap, I would suggest to just replace it with a new belt and make sure the tension is good. Belt dressing doesn't help repair a belt but just subdue the noise for a bit at best.
Besides....it makes a mess. I hate that stuff.

Rumour has it you can use soap to stop belt noise but the best fix is going to be replacement if the belt is 30k miles old
