Should you go by your shirt size or what? I'm around a M or L 8-10 or 12-14(for really tight shirts)

Suggestions? How do you know if the dress will look good on you? What are the signs if any?

hey, I'm about the same size as you.

Sizes on dresses (like with all clothes) vary from store to store.... It tends to go like this... the more $ you pay, the more flattering-- lower, your size.

Best advice-- hold dresses up to you, guess, and start trying things on.

Empoyees are usually trained in this sort of thing, and can assist.

Hope this helps-- (sorry for the rude pointless comments you've recieved.)

You should for dresses based on your size and your proportions. Are you under 5'4" or so? If so, look in the petite section so that the arms and torso can fit your frame. If not, you can shop at misses. Try to find something that shows off your best attributes or hides your flaws. If your bottom is bigger than the top, try to look for dresses with A-line skirts that flare out or dress styles where there's some accent on top to draw the eyes up. The best advice is just to know your body and to try things on before you buy.

For a sure fit, you must try it on before you buy it. Go with your normal size. Try a 8-10 and if it is too small, try the next size up (or down) until you find the right fit. Most stores have associates that would be happy to help you in finding your correct size and assuring a good fit. Good luck.

Follow the advice of those who wrote to try the dress on!
Companies use "fit models" to create their clothes. Different companies use differently proportioned fit models. For example, the Guess fit models must be skinny, busty and medium-height. The Gap/BananaRepublic/Old Navy fit models must be rounder than most because all their sizes are roomy.
So try it before you buy it!

Try them on. If you're that fit, you should look for one with a smaller top...unless you have like huge breasts. But your butts. Don't choose it too small or you'll see your butt. But..go my shirt size because the bottom is just a flowy thing.
