It goes to sleep mode automatically. Is it the monitor that needs to be replaced or is it something else? I've heard that monitors here don't work on the other side of the equator because of the magnetic field and I have to tune the monitor to make it work. Is that true?

It's not true about the magnetic field.

Sleep mode is a power saving feature set in the display properties (the screen saver tab). If there is no output to the monitor or the computer sits idle it could be what's happening.

If not, the power requirement for the monitor might need 60 Hz and not 50 Hz, or the voltage is not up to snuff (115 Volts AC). He should look at the voltage requirements and make sure they match. If not he'll need to get a converter.

According to the website I list as a source, The Philippines has the same electric standard as the USA. (If your brother says the wall outlets are identical, this should confirm the fact.) Guam has the same, and I lived there for over a year.

My guess is either the sleep/power options, as stated by others, or the monitor (or computer) may have been damaged during shipment. Have him try the monitor on a different computer, if possible. Also trying a known good monitor on his computer will tell whether the computer is working OK.

I don't know much about the Philippines, but the magnetic field of the earth has nothing to do with it. If any magnetic interference is there, it would be visible in the display, and a deguass would fix it. I am betting that the power distribution is different. Are they running 120V AC in the Philipines? If not it won't work correctly (you'll be lucky if it doesn't explode)
