You can use without gas but it is harder to make the weld without it.

Mig welding without gas is almost impossible Argon or Argon mix is OK. Gas-less migs are available but they leave slag and are useful if welding out of doors where wind would blow the gas away resulting in a very poor weld. If you use a mig at work surely you would notice the effect on your welds when the gas ran out ?.

The gasless mig welders have the wire with the flux built in. This leaves a slag much like arc welding that has to be cleaned off. Generally messier and probably not quite as good of a bead.

mig welders primerially use co2. as a flux for welding steel ect argosheild has say 5% argon added to assist. pure argon is used for alloy some cast or stainless steel. tig welders use a variety of pure and mixed gasses as fluxes and normaly produce a better weld on alloy or stainless. gasless migs use fluxed wire. ideal for welding outside (wind blows gas away) but flux causes rapid wear on tips.

There are MIG's that use flux-core wire but I find the argon shield to be a far better weld.

the smaller Mig welders which use the gasless (cored) wire are fine for what they are.

They can only weld mild steel as that is the only cored wire available and they are only suitable for steel thicker than about 0.8mm.

They leave a slag which has to be cleaned away, just like arc welding, and the weld appearance is not as clean, but the weld is just as effective.

argon is an inert (wont burn)gas,it shields the weld pool from oxygen the same as flux does for gas and ark welding, without it the moltan metal would not flow under control because of the reaction with the surrounding air your wire would constantly stick to the workpiece.

You need the inert gas, argon, to shield the weld or it will oxidize and weaken the weld.

The answer is No.Even if you had Gas you will still need Argon.
