I have an 05 Chevy Aveo auto transmission. I have had problems with it shifting. It takes like 3 miles before it shifts to overdrive. I took it to have it service and they can't find any problems. I also have been getting bad gas milage like 24 or so to a gallon. Wanted to know if any one else has had this problem.

I have an '05 Aveo as well. My car won't shift into overdrive sometimes if I accelerate it too fast, or when I'm accelerating down an incline (ramps entering the freeway). To allow it to shift, I let up on the gas to get the RPM's down and drop my speed to about 50, then GRADUALLY give it gas and it will usually shift. Sounds to me like Aveo transmissions just weren't built very well. Hopefully in the new '07 models, they fixed that problem

sounds like the clutch is going out the throwout bearing is part of the assembly its what the clutch pedal is hooked up to throw out the clutch as far as replacement if you know anyone thats the cheapest it requires the removal of the transmission and this repair varies according the the state you live in Washington where i live it ranges between 300-500 depending on all that needs to be replaced the parts alone according to my city is 159- 249 this includes the clutch, plate, and throwout bearing and assembly tool also you didnt list your engine size there are 3 so I went with the first one on the list for the prices so your looking at what shop rates are per hour for your area and also every manufacture of cars puts out a book on how long it takes to do a particular repair so if the book says it takes 4 hrs and the shop rate is 60 an hr thats around 240 for labor and 250 for parts pretty close to the 500 range and as far as the grinding noise in the transmission you may be low on gear oil manual transmissions use gear oil if you continue to drive it you chances of it going out and doing major damage to the trans is pretty good then your looking at a lot to replace the whole thing and my listing for prices is based on seattle Washington so parts and labor is not the same in every state so its a guesstamate if you have a community college that has an automotive program you may be able to get parts at a whole sale cost and no labor the problem is its takes a wee bit longer to get the repair done because your car becomes a learning tool instruction so it take longer but may save you a whole lot of big bucks and if your going to go through the trouble of replacing the throwout bearing might as well do the clutch too cause you have to take it all apart anyway to get at the bearing hope this helps LR

i don't know about your 24 mpg...that sounds bad for that car...but the tranny will not shift into overdrive until it is warmed up, that's why it won't shift. It's not a problem, it's just that the fluid has to warm up and thin out before it can shift into OD.
