i've cleaned the carburetor out, it's firing, and i'm waiting on an air filter but still it won't even come close to starting. The bike has been sitting for about four years while I was overseas and has not been started in that whole time frame.

What do you mean when you say "cleaned the carburetor out". Did you take the carb apart and make sure the pilot jet is cleaned out and not clogged with residue ? Maybe have a friend pull you with a car and rope.

It's most likley the carb. have it rebuilt. Check sparkplug, And god for sake DO NOT ever use ether to start a bike..... It could cause piston to shatter.

Did you drain the gas tank and gas lines? In 4 years dirt, and other thing could have migrated into the fuel line and is clogging the line.

if it is firing, then it is not getting gas. Check the petcock. there is a plug in the bottom of it. take it out and check the screen inside.
