This is just for employees of a company, not for customers.

No. My husband runs a business and without his Spanish speaking employees he would not be able to communicate with a third of his customers. I know we live in America and everyone should learn the language but the truth is, that my family only speaks English and it is a real problem sometimes. Living in Florida, it is a great help to speak several languages.

I would always have said no, and I am not sure I'm quite at saying 'yes', but I have been educated to a problem here.

Our own less educated people here do not get a 'foreign' language in school, while less educated ESL students (even illegally here ones) get educated in English and end up bilingual. The Spanish only speaking workers at lower wages means management only wants to promote, and sometimes even hire, bilingual managers which puts an additional ceiling on our own folks in their own country, which does not seem fair.

All the same, when customers speak Spanish in large numbers, I understand employers wanting to be able to serve them well.

In Mexico, I understand it is the law that you have to be able to speak fluent Spanish to get a job. I haven't thought through what that sort of law would mean here, but for the first time I understand why Mexico has that law - to protect its own people.

No, only if it's a federal or state workplace, either than that it is up to the business themselves. By making it a law that only English be spoken at work, the next step is at the home, that in turn would require monitoring which is an invasion of privacy.

Yes,because this is America. Secondly, because chances are the people you come into the most contact with are not going to be fluent in whatever language you speak.

Not too mention depending on your job, if you had to operate machinery or follow complex plans they are going to be in English and you need to be able yo understand them so you don't hurt or kill someone.

No. The owner of the company should dictate how communication should be done - not government!

No, of course not. Why would one want to legislate another's manner of expression?
