Why is the stepmom (or the woman becoming the stepmom) usually evil or bad in movies? Hellraiser, Cinderella, Snow White, Dead Silence (sorry if I ruined that for ya), Sleepy Hollow, Ever After, The Parent Trap, Nanny McPhee, and Ella Enchanted to name a few. Why oh why does Hollywood feel the need to do this? Especially in kids movies?????

because to children it is a new beast to tame. It never is easy to accept someone new in your parent's life, wether it be stepfather or stepmother. It's easier to accept if they are some evil person who's ready to do evil things to you just to get their way. If the person was nice then the child wouldn't have a reason to dislike their new step parent.

I have to tell you that I love my stepmom. Not as much as my mother, but I still love her. She didn't steal my dad away from me, she humbly accepted the fact that I am my dad's only child and I am very important in his life. She has never done anything that would be considered "evil", she loves me like a mother should, she provides guidance and friendship and she is a wonderful woman. She's never forced me to call her mom and she understands the relationship between me and my dad and she doesn't try to take him away or drive me out of his life.
I have never understood the evil step mother approach in movies. It probably has to do with adding conflict to a story. Every story needs an antagonist or unrest in the plot line. A stepmother is the right solution.
Because it's not mom, she didn't bring you into the world, she wasn't your orginal caregiver, and because she is taking your dad's attention. These are probably the main reasons for animosity towards the stepmother figure.

because this is how the kids see the women she is coming into thier home and taking time away form dad changing the way things are run. Yes thier are good step parents but what kind of movie does it make no conflect at all. You will find good stepparents in books though and some movies have the step mother better then the regular mother and father but its rare to name one Sound of music .

They need to have a villian in the movie so the main character has something to over come to give the kids a good out look on life at the end of the movie.

Same reason that Disney never had a Mom in any feature movies that wasn't dead or ended up dead by the end of the cartoon. Its a formula that works.
Not sure if thats true, think about it.
