I'm a teenage boy studying in the 8th grade and I have noticed somebody in my grade who is trying to become my friend and is following me everywhere I go and trying to approach me and talk to me. But the problem- I really don't want to become his friend and I don't like him, though he's good in school. What do I do in order to make him stop trying to become my friend?

Ironically, the best way to deal with these kinds of people is to overwhelm them. Celebrities and politicans use this all the time as well as the popular kids at your school.

Approach the kid in a friendly manner, and ask him how he's doing and what he likes to do. Then, invite him to go to something special your doing like going to the movies or a party or whatever. Chances are he won't show up and if he does, he won't know how to handle himself in such a socially intense situation so he'll feel embarrassed.

Another thing you can do is think of him as an opportunity to look better in front of your friends or some girls you might wanna hang out with. Let him take the lead in some conversation at lunch or while your working in class, asking him for his opinion or what's the right or cool thing to do. Again, chances are he'll backdown or feel embarrassed, but if he doesn't, he'll usually just make a fool out of himself which lets you come to the rescue by making an easy joke.

Your objective here is to be nice while asking him to politely go away without him recognizing it. Both of these approaches should result in him realizing he can't play at your level and will be better off by just minding his own business.

The next time he approaches and you can both take a few private minutes, question him as to why he wants to be your friend. In fact, you may be able to redirect him to someone else who you feel may be more suited to his company.

Just be kind to him! And, good luck to both of you!
