I have no idea where to live and not being that familiar with the city when I get there, I thought I'd just rent a room in a house or something until I settle more permanently.

Hey...since I was on a roll answering your questions (and hadn't even noticed lol), thought I'd give this one a shot. Even though I'd agree with checking Craig's list, I really don't think that's going to be the best way to find a place here, unless you really luck out.

If you are looking to live in Boston proper, I know there used to be roommate matching services (although like most things in Boston they cater to the students primarily, so not sure if that would be a problem). The one that comes to mind that existed forever is Matching Roommates. Sorry no clue if they are still out there, but I am certain something is.

What you might want to consider is trying to get a summer sublet from a student. That would give you a couple of months to get to know the area, an it likely would be furnished and probably below market value (especially if they are running out of time lol). Just trying to figure out how you would find one.

Do you have anyplace near you that carries out of town newspapers? The best place to look for this, and all apartments in this area is the Sunday Boston Globe classifieds. Not sure if they put the classifieds online...the Globe is online at Boston.com. So I'd see if you could find that or maybe subscribe for a month or so (just make sure classifieds are included).

Another good resource, although I'm not at all certain how you would get it, would be through the regional newspapers that are free locally and cover Boston and the close burbs. I can look and see if they give any web site etc. Also local realtors may have this but they'd rip you off for a finder's fee. Regretfully most of these are advertised on bulletin boards in the area. I think most of the big colleges have housing offices and they may have some listings for that.

There were a couple of boarding homes in Brookline, MA that were pretty ok when I lived near there. You might want to web search that and see if any of them are listed anywhere.

Let me know if I can be of any more help...feel free to email if you want. I know how hard it can be to not have the resources you need handy, and I'm scared the stuff that made it online wouldn't be worth having in many cases. But best of luck with this. This area is great in terms of location and things to do, so I'm sure you will have a lot of fun exploring when you get here!

Take care and hope this one helped too!!!

Came back to say I was wrong! Just thought I'd take a quick look at craigslist and was stunned by how many are up there. I didn't want to mislead you so please ignore what I said about it lolol (although I still think the better bargains are likely to be in the other places, esp for long term). But some here are pretty decent, but be careful about location! To bad the studio on Comm Ave doesn't have a kitchen...it is in one of the nicest downtown areas and would be a very fun place to explore the city from.

And given what I've seen of sublet pricing, if I do say so myself I think that might be a great way to go...much of it is WAY below market value! Here's where I was looking at;

I see alot of rooms for rent/ share on Craiglist.com. It allows you to search which city you are in. Thought it was a great on-line resource for alot of real estate needs.
