OK, the correct answer is. NO you will not need a passport to board the ship (Gov't issued photo ID,i..e, driver license and birth certificate); nor will you need a passport to get off the ship in the Bahamas. You cruise ship issued "cruise card" will serve as your ID in all of your ports for disembarking and embarking. In essence, the cruise line will verify your identification before you get on ship and make that information available to officials in all ports, including when you get back to the US.

Now, there is one exception which will be a problem for you if it occurs. You do not need a passport for any cruises leaving from a US port. But if you get sick, have an accident that requires you to fly back to the US you will need a passport. Since you don't have one I have no idea what US officials would do.

All of your questions on passports can be answered on this web link: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html

* Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
* As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Yes if by air, >>>>not required until 2008 if by sea? You will be able to go, but expect to be delayed by customs when you return to the States.

No need for a passport while cruising the caribbean from a US port.. You need a birth certificate and photo ID. You need a passport if you fly out the country.

Have a great trip.

You do not need a passport for a cruise until Jan 01,2008. You will need your driver's license and your original or certified birth certificate. Passports were suppose to be mandatory for cruise in 2007 but they decided to start with flights. It's best to have a passport but you don't have to have it for a cruise til 08.

You shouldn't have a problem. Read this carefully and have the necessary I.D.:
http://www.un.int/bahamas/tourist%20visa%20info.htm

"There are no visa requirements for American and Canadian Citizens. However, they must show proof of citizenship."
