We normally go to North Myrtle Beach (Cherry Grove), with my sister's family and my parents, but this year, it will be just my family (me, husband, 2 kids under 5), and my parents.

We'd like to try something different this year. I LOVE Myrtle Beach, but just feel like a change. I definitely still need warm waters, so I don't want to go too far north. We'll be driving from Ohio.

We've been to the outer banks several times. We especially like Nags Head. There is plenty to do, for example, several lighthouses to walk through and The Wright Brothers Museum. Crabbing is also very popular. As far as the kids are concerned, mini golf and a few small aquariums and zoos are about it. Go to www.carolinadesigns.com to look for places to stay. There are a lot of houses right on the beach that are pretty reasonable if you don't mind not having a pool. The houses with pools are far more expensive.

If you don't mind driving a little further I would recommend Hilton Head, SC. We stayed at a house in Sea Pines Village and were very pleased. The beach is flat and wider than any we've ever been to. The kids loved riding there bikes on it. In the village of Sea Pines they also have horse back riding and several restaurants. The Salty Dog is a popular place. There is a little grocery store, a few restaurants that are right on the beach as well as a pizza and ice cream shop for the kids. There are also several lighthouses to tour there.

One more suggestion would be Isle of Palms, SC. You would want to make sure you stayed at Wild Dunes. It is a huge resort that is excellent for kids of all ages. Every Sunday there is a Poolside BBQ with live music and games for the kids. They also have planned events for the kids...such as arts and crafts and educational walks on the beach. Parents are welcome to go along. They also offer a lot of family activies. Crabbing, once again, was big for us. They do this several times a week. You need to call ahead to reserve a spot. They take you out by boat to the best spot....you crab....and then they actually cook it and you eat it right on the beach. Very fun!

Good luck planning your vacation! We always put a lot of thought and work into ours as well.
