I would think it is not good to tan during pregnancy which I did not but my little girl is 5 days old now and I want to go tanning ONLY if it is safe. I am breastfeeding and wondering if the lights could damage or put anything bad into the milk? has anyone does this before or know the answer?

It is not a priority but I have my own tanning bed. I use to use it once to four times monthly prior to becoming pregnant and I know it causes cancer but guess what so does being outside in the sun. The reason I purchased the bed is because of clinical depression which my doctor recommended and studies show light therapy help raise your neurotransmitters that cause depression. So far I dont have any baby blues but would like to do it once to 4 times monthly again like before.

Tanning

Tanning is completely compatible with breastfeeding and will not alter the milk whatsoever. There is no record of any dangers to the breastfed baby in relation to tanning. Sometimes clients are given Carotene to enhance the tanning - that should be avoided while breastfeeding. Make sure to protect your nipples from burn (for your own comfort more than anything), and keep in mind that ultraviolet exposure ages skin prematurely and increases the risk of cancer.

Sunscreen, Self-tanning products

Because these are topically applied, very little would absorb through the skin into the bloodstream and therefore into your milk. They should not be a problem for the breastfeeding mom and baby. Do be careful about applying it on the breast - make sure baby doesn't get any in his mouth.

The spray tanning booths (also called UV-free tanning, airbrush tanning, spray on tanning, etc.) come under the category of self-tanning products. To prevent baby ingesting the self-tanning lotion, wash the self-tanning product from your breasts before nursing.

I would think after giving birth 5 days ago, tanning would be the last thing on your mind. Although I enjoy an occasional stint in the tanning bed and it can be relaxing remember that you will start leaking at odd moments and that is not going to be a comfortable while being baked.

After I had my son and finished breastfeeding it took about 2 weeks for my breasts to stop producing milk. You have to ensure that you are not squeezing or pumping to relieve the pain that comes with the engorged breasts. My mom told me to tie a cloth belt around them to help stop anything from causing the milk to come out. I used a bath robe belt and whenever I went to bed, or was at home alone I tied it around them. It helped prevent them from leaking and finally the milk dried up and the pain was gone. If they hurt, put a warm compress on them or take a hot bath or shower. It helps relieve the pain. I hope this helps, and I sure hope you're not in pain!

I don't think a tanning bed will do anything bad to your breast milk. The usual cautions about tanning apply, but use your common sense and you and the baby should be fine.

I hate to tell you this but using a tanning bed is never safe, it is a known causer of cancer. It isn't worth it to me to be tan one summer if I am going to pay the price with my life later.

Tanning in a bed, while probably not harmful for her (I'm not sure) is definitely harmful for you! I did it, and have had precancerous cells, and I'm 23. It's so not a good idea if you want to watch your daughter have her own children. Try self tanner, or the spray on tan!! Please, please! I don't blame you for wanting brown skin, but there are much safer ways to attain it.

Forget the tanning bed. If you want to use it to stave off depression (yeah, right), then go for a walk and get some sunshine. And take your baby with you.

I dont know about the breast feeding issue, but tanning beds are really bad for you I had a friend with melonoma and a tan is not worth it, she had to go and get burned with acid (or something like it) about every three months. My sister always tells my 16 yr old neice and 20 yr old younger sister that "white can be beautiful too"
