we have a few comps in the house and i would like to take some files like pictures and stuff avalible to them all what is the easyest os to use to serve those files

well first of all what makes you think you need a server ?

all you need to do is set all the computers to the same work group . once done create anew folder on the pc take the files and move them to this folder , share the folder . then map the folder and create a drive for it and it will appear as a network drive giving each pc the ability to access it with ease

Best OS for a small network: the one you are comfortable with. Windows (XP/Vista), Mac OSX and Linux all have a very easy and useful way for creating small-scale networks (in fact, they all use Microsoft window's protocols - Samba is a free implementation of it). You can set the name of the workgroup at any computer, and then define on each computer which directories you wish to share. The software discovers the computers on the local network, so nothing more needs to be done. In fact, you can even mix all three OS in the network (I have at home a Linux box, a mac and two windows xp which happily share directories). You may have some user administration issues with a mixed environment, though.

If you were to ask about larger scale networks the answer would have been different, but that is not the case here.

how do you set all 3 pc`s to the same work group?
i also have 3 pc`s in my house, could you please write me a walkthrough.

Its upto ur requirement. it depends on no. of pcs also.
