Yes. Now is that all you want to know?

OK, a bit more: he wrote both fiction and essays, and was active in the Civil Rights movement. His book Giovanni's Room was considered a revealing book about a gay relationship. I think his essays are stylistically better than his fiction. You could try "Sonny's Blues" which is a short story and see what you think. There is also a good documentary on him; it might be available on DVD or VHS.

Bio: He grew up in Harlem; his father was a minister and very strict. James was extremely intelligent and once said that he had read every book in the public library in Harlem by the time he was 14. If you see the doc., you can get a glimpse of how bright he was.

Yes. I loved "Giovanni's Room". I've also read "The Fire Next Time" and "Go Tell It On The Mountain" and the book he wrote with Margaret Mead - on race. He was so gifted. I think when I go to the library, I'll look for something else by James Baldwin. Thank you for reminding me.
