You'd be surprised... most new things are a lot older than they seem.

Take Hero of Alexandria. Lived around 10 AD. He invented a steam-powered engine, the first vending machine, and even constructed an entirely mechanical play.

But most of his inventions were just too early. Society didn't have the structure to support them. One (probably apocryphal) story relates that the ruler of his town rejected using the engine for work, "for what would we do with all the slaves if we used that instead?".

And so it goes with a lot of things. Let's not forget also the long periods in history where rulers retained their dominion through the ignorance of the masses. It takes a lot more than an idea to add something to the sum of human knowledge!

Even now there are organizations almost wholly dedicated to eliminating novelty. Unions full of people who would be unemployed if replaced by modern robots. Others who fear the unknown. Our society is STILL holding us back from what we could become. Will it change, or will we lapse back into darkness?

Only time will tell.

"If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." (Isaac Newton)

It takes the while until there are enough shoulders to stand on.
I think there has been evidence of civilization about 30 000 years back (I may be wrong though) and that's actually not that long a time, if you have to start at zero.

Actually, man has only been here for 10,000 years. Carbon tests are pre-historic man are faulty. Science is always changing and proving itself false, unfortunately, scientists, although they know this, never reveal that science will change. For example, DNA. when DNA came out it was revolutionary and unquestionable. Now it has been revealed that the original DNA was faulty and not as precise as first thought. They are know expanding DNA into 100's of factors, not just dozens.

The learning curve is exponential. The more you know, the more you can earn. It took that many years of learning to get to where we can learn at our current rate.
