But it would be easier if you could provide some additional details as to what your sister is having difficulty with, and even how old she is. In general though, it's easier to start on a smaller, less complicated project and move on to bigger projects as you get more experience and more comfortable with the hobby.

To be honest, there are thousands of sites on-line, or if she needs more hands-on assistance, I would recommend either the library, or your local newsagents/supermarket. There are lots of magazines out there, with some - no offence - basic instructions on how to complete cross-stitch. Alternatively, try an on-line chat forum, just use any search engine.
BTW, how old is she? Younger children find a pre-printed fabric easier, whilst a teenager or older will probably find a library less intimidating! Good luck.

She may need to start with stamped cross stitch which is already stamped right on the Aida cloth.
Or she can try easier patterns until she gets the hang of stitching. I know our Michael's has a great range of pre-teen and teen designs that my DD likes learning on.

This question would be easier to answer if you explained what exactly about cross-stitch your sister finds difficult.
If she finds remembering which stitches she's completed difficult, then, yes, highlighting or coloring in the squares on the template can be helpful.

Starting with a simple first project is key to learning how to Cross Stitch. If the project she is trying is too hard, tell her to put it aside and stitch a small kit first.
