First of all, I'd be very leery of buy something used.

The problem there is that you will never know how is was cared for, or how much use it has had. One key problem with "used" is the potential for the hard drive to die. If that happened to you and you had to purchase a new drive, have it installed, and then have a tech reinstall your software, you'd have been better off just buying an economical new laptop.

We have 9 Dell computers in the family and have had great luck with them. Not one failure to date. We have 6 desktops and 3 laptops and all have performed flawlessly. I'd check them out if I were you.

It certainly doesn't hurt to look at other brands. A good place to look at usually good prices is http://www.tigerdirect.com

Hope this helps.

DELL may be a good choice for you as considering about price and quality. Especially when you get coupon it can be a really good deal. If you are not very urgent you can wait for coupon on Dell.com (it happens often and you may can look at some websites like dealsea.com to get know about the new coupon). If you are urgent maybe you can look at ebay.com, where some people got the laptop during promotion then can sell you with an OK price.

for cheaper brands dell maybe?

theres a lot of deals out there. Check ebay, froogle, or craigslist. you can find laptops starting at $400.00 easily. You could also just compare offers at places like bestbuy and circuit city.

The best thing is to shop around. It's easy to find low prices for notebooks.

I am in the same boat. I am considering a reconditioned laptop. I understand that Intechra resells hardware although I do not know if they will have want you want at a price you can afford.
