I am 17 years old and I have an appointment to have a pap smear done. I have been having irregular periods for quite a while so I decided to make an appointment.

I am still a virgin and not sexually active.
I am very scared that the pap smear will hurt since I am still a virgin because my hymen is most probably still intact.

Can anyone give me any clues as to what to expect? Will it hurt? Will I bleed? aahh I'm so scared. Please help. Any information is MUCH appreciated! Thank You.

I was a virgin when I had my first Pap smear and it did not hurt me at all, nor did it bleed. It does feel a bit uncomfortable, but it was not painful. The more nervous you are about it, the more likely it is to hurt. You just have to relax and remember, he/she has done this a billion times, so it's not like they're gonna remember what yours looked like anyway!!!

Oh and the first time I went was for the same reason as you...irregular periods. My pap came back normal and then they did an ultrasound of my ladyparts, which was actually pretty cool. They didn't see anything wrong there either, so they put me on birth control and VOILA, regular periods!!

So anyway, just don't work yourself up over it girl. You'll be fine!

There's nothing to be scared about. The pap smear does not hurt and you won't bleed.

I had my first pap test years ago when I was 19 and still a virgin. I did not bleed. If the doctor does it right (carefully and with the right size speculum) and you RELAX, you won't bleed.

Do you know about the Gyn exam itself? After the doctor speaks with you, you'll lie on a table (you'll be wearing a gown by now) with a cloth sheet over you and place your feet in stirrups. It would be a good idea to tell the doctor you're a virgin so that he/she will use the smallest speculum. The doctor first opens you with a speculum. Try to relax here. Even though the doctor will be using the smallest speculum, it may be a uncomfortable for the few minutes it is in. The more relaxed you are, the less uncomfortable it is. The doctor examines inside, then does the pap test. It only takes a minute and you may feel a slight touch inside (like a swab rubbing against your cheek). After that, the speculum is removed and the rest of the exam is done, while the nurse prepares the sample for the lab.

The worst part for a virgin is when the doctor puts the speculum in. I remember it drove me crazy. Fortunately, it's only in there for a couple of minutes. The first time it will be unnerving, but the more you go, you'll get used to it.

You'll be fine. Everyone goes through their first pap test. Try to relax. :)

The speculum part shouldn't hurt if you tell the doctor that your a virgin, their job is to make it comfortable for you. The one part that is very uncomfortable is when they take a sample from your cervix. Your cervix is shaped like a donut with a small hole that dilates when giving birth, well in a pap smear they stick a q-tip like swab into that small itty bitty hole, that is what is so uncomfortable. Since all of these other women gave you their suggestions, insights and opinions you should do well on your first exam. I have been going to the doctor since I was 19 and am now 23, I always stress out about the q tip part but since I know its coming I try to relax and its over within minutes. You will do fine and you have to think that a few second of uncomfortableness will be better than a lifetime of sickness and disease if you never went through with it. Good luck and Good Health to you!!

I had my first pap smear at ate 19. I was not a virgin. But I was still very very scared and embarrassed because It's just very uncomfortable to be there with your legs open and someone looking at you...especially when the Dr. is a young handsome guy. hehe..but anyway...when it is a man doing it by law there has to be a girl nurse in the room too. Just in case you dont know.

You have to be really relaxed if not then it will hurt a bit because they open you with the tool they use and it's really thick. Then they stick a long Q-Tip looking stick and stick it all the way inside quickly and swipe it and get a smudge. It's a bit painful especially when it's your first time and don't know what to expect.

Since you are a virgin, there is a slight chance that you will bleed. Just let the doctor know that it's your first time and that you are kind of nervous, she/he will be sure to be gentle. It's not that big of a deal - getting a pap smear. It's over in a matter of five minutes, if that. It's just uncomfortable, really.

You'll be fine, just relax and if you feel any pain down there while they're doing something, just let the doctor know so they can make you feel more comfortable during the whole process. Good luck!

I won't lie to you. It will hurt a little, but you have to relax is what they will tell you. I had my first irregular cycle after turning 24. All they did to me was put me on the pill to get it back on track. I have never took birth control pills before. I was scared because i though i was going to get fat. All they did was break me out with acne, which is something you can fix. I'm 25 now and my cycles are back on track. Plus this will not be your last time to get pap smears. You have to get those at least every 6 months to 1 year. Just for your self to know everything is going ok down there. But remember you have to relax. Good luck!!!

You most likely will bleed a small amount. I was so nervous my first time. I made the mistake of using a male doctor, I felt more comfortable with a female obgyn- Try to relax, it will be hard, but it nevers get easy for me. The more relaxed you are the easier it will be.
