Back then you had Tribe Called Quest, Rakim, Tupac, NWA etc. all had meaning in their songs (i.e. life in the ghetto, religion, history, etc). Now it seems like all the new artists talk about is sex, clubbing, getting crunk, guns and that's about it.

I always feel like when a new artist comes out, their fist album is about as "real" as it gets. Then the money starts rolling in, and the next couple albums is all about fame/money/girls etc. Sometimes they will try to revert back to what they used to write, but I feel like its fake because they dont really have hardships anymore, and they wouldnt set foot in the ghetto.

So if I want to listen to "good" rap (or any genre) it has to either be early stuff from the artist, or underground artists who dont have the money/recognition yet.

I also think it has to do with what will sell records. If someone breaks the trend and sings about history, will they sell as many albums as they would have if they made a song about sex?

yup, all todays mainstream rappers lyrics are soo poorly written, they have no complex word schemes, poor word choice and their similies and metaphors are ******* weak at the best and then to make it worse they are rapping about the most shallow pointless ****, i mean everybody raps about getting a girl at least once, but when every song is about getting different girls and how you gonna do her thats crossing it. today they doing it just for the money, i mean even some of the best like big did it for the money, but at least big had MAD skills and could murder on the mic.

R.I.P to what used to be known as emceeing, i dont even know what to call what they doing, but bob sure *** hell knows it aint emceeing.
