Babe Ruth's legal name is George Herman Ruth. His swing was so pretty compared to the others of his time that eventually people called him The Babe in reference to how pretty his swing was or since he was part italian the great Bambino. The other names all originated from his ability to hit home runs at will The Sultan of Swat because he was the king of hitting. The Colosossus of Crash for how hard he would hit the ball.

The answers that pertain to the Orioles is the true story of how he was nicknamed. That is a great movie, my 5 boys have wore it out 2 different times. Also as your "little man" gets a little older and learns to know more about baseball it will help to explain when the fans of today talk of Griffey, Sosa, McGuire, Bonds and others all hitting 40-50 or more home runs every year so the Babe couldn't make it in today's era, tell him that the Babe led the league in pitching prior to becoming an outfielder and he also was hitting these home runs when the next best batter hit 8-10 a year. There are years when Babe Ruth hit more home runs that entire teams did. True he was fun loving and enjoyed his beer and cigars and also women, but he was in a completely different talent hemisphere than anyone else in baseball. To put that HR stat in perspective if Bonds hits 60 or 70 Babe would hit 150-200.

Wow, Babe Ruth...Hmm... He was a magor prospect in 1914 and his new Baltomore Orioles manager (Jack Dunn) was so excited he was referred too as his ''Babe''... His Legal name was George Herman Ruth, and learned how to play the great game of baseball at a private school, his father owned a tavern and he hardly ever saw him. Very Sad. Try to explain this to him slowly, its kind of hard...Also tell him that Babe Ruth is condsidered the best baseball player who ever lived and used to have the Home Run record for most Home Runs in a season....GREAT movie the sandlot, get the 2nd one =D...... Also, the ''Babe'' (a nickname for him in his time) is a Hall Of Famer, (a museuem to be elected too if you have unbelievable talent) and he was voted to the All Century All Star Team (were the best of the BEST BEST players go, SUCH a honor) he also is 3rd in homeruns all time.........But, Barry Bonds used sterioids and hes 2nd, so hes really the 2nd in homeruns, but he was olny 37 I believe when he retired and had about 3 years left in him and could still be the homerun king if he played. Anyways, he hit 714 homeruns in his carrer and played all of his carrer as a Yankee (except his last year were he players for the braves) ands the most famous Yankee legend. The Babe IS the ''Babe''.

It was a nickname given to him when he was first seen by Jack Dunn. When the other players saw him, they said "He is Jack's new babe" because Ruth was 19 and looked so young. That name stuck with him ever since. Enjoy the movie it is a good one.

Hermann Ruth was his name. "Babe" was a common nickname in the early part of the century. Ruth played baseball for a catholic orphanage and while trying out for a professional team was referred to jokingly one day as one of the school's "babes" and the name stuck.

Babe Ruth earned his nickname during spring training of 1914 when teammates on the minor league Baltimore Orioles began referring to him as owner Jack Dunn’s new "babe?"

" When the other players on the Orioles caught sight of Ruth, they nicknamed him 'Jack's newest babe.' The reference stayed with Ruth the rest of his life as he was most commonly referred to as Babe Ruth from then on."

It was just a nickname given to him when he was young. He signed a contract with the Orioles at a very young age and they called him the baby of the bunch. Over time it was shorten to just Babe.

I remember that movie! Good one - anyways, I'm guessing because he was such a hard-hitter and looked like a toddler, and his last name is Ruth - but there's the link for you to read through.
