My female rat is about 8-10 weeks old and I did not realize that she could get pregnant that young. So I put her in a cage with my Male and low and behold she got pregnant!!! Is that going to create problems during birth? Also does the male need to be moved out of the cage?

yes i would definitely move the male out of the cage, once the babies r born there is a good chance he will eat them. And i agree with the person above, they should be housed in seperate cages unless the male is neutered, even then it could be too stressful for the female because she will be constantly dominated. the male will always have first choice of food, water, etc. its just easier to keep them apart. also, because of her age she might not be the greatest mother to this litter so i would keep an eye on them and make sure they are getting enough warmth (shredded newspaper is a great insulator). after about a week u should notice the babies beginning to crawl around and searching for food from the same bowl as the mother. just keep watch and they should be healthy (however, because of the mothers young age some of the babies might not survive and the mom will eat them if she knows they won't survive....don't be alarmed, most small animals do this including rabbits and hedgehogs)

A male & female should NEVER be housed together, unless the male is neutered.

They should have separate cages, not only for the pregnancy period, but overall.

She could have complications due to her young age, mostly stress & not having motherly instincts when the pups are born.

they can concieve right after giving birt so yes the male has to be removed. call your vet and make an appointment with them to have her checked over. they will give you the best answer to whether or not there will be complications.

I hate rats. My solution to all rat problems is the same: kill them.
